I am a bird photographer. Now don’t get me wrong, I enjoy shooting other things as well. If there is a gorgeous scene or some small critter, I will take full advantage of the situation. But it always comes back to birds. They are the main reason I travel, and often the determining factor of where and when. As hard as I may try at times to open my mind to alternative forms of motivation, birds always win in the end. It’s undeniable, so might as well embrace it.
I think nothing of getting up in the dark hours of the night, driving to another country and back, just to see an Ivory Gull before work. Or laying in a cow pasture with fire ants and mosquitos for the sake of spending time with a Burrowing Owl. Or paddling around the Florida swamps for weeks on end hoping for a glimpse of an Ivory-billed Woodpecker. I never feel more alive and happy than I do at those times. There’s pretty much nowhere I would rather be than laying in the mud or snow, getting to know a bird through my lens.
